i notice that sometimes the machine im using to run denis at home on isnt able to complete tasks by the deadline. to keep it simple for this project should i manually be abandoning tasks that are past due?

Yes, you should just abort any tasks that are overdue.

Better solution is to not ask for SO MUCH work from the project in the first place.

Change your cache setting for the host to only 0.1 days and 0 additional days so you don't get more work than you can finish in time.

We need a better solution as that setting means no gpugrid tasks for me, or climate prediction or any other projects that have very long tasks.

You know you can always use different venue settings for different projects. Set up a venue for GPUGrid with larger cache settings.
And a different venue setting for Denis with low cache settings to avoid getting too much work that can't be finished in time.

Split your CPU vs GPU work into separate clients plus the weighting of different venues.
