Did anyone ask you to rent these virtual machines?

No. Marcin I see you have managed to contribute a paltry 25,000 cobblestones. I wanted to add more crunching power to this project to enhance my personal stats rank. When I started them there was work but it ran out.

I don't think it is unreasonable to request a continuous supply of tasks to keep users engaged.

The project does not exist for your personal stats. We volunteer to help the project. Calling someone's contributions "paltry" is childish and rude.

Admins could you please ensure we have tasks to crunch. It is a waste of money and electricity hiring computers from TheScienceCloud only to discover them sitting idle due to your project's lack of tasks.

There are plenty of other Boinc Projects you can put your machines on to get credits, some even faster than here. ALL Projects go thru phases where they have tasks or they don't, it's why it's called Distributed Computing and soo many Projects have joined in since Boinc came about way back when, the idea being you get to choose where you want to crunch and if one Project is running low on tasks you can always choose another!!

True enough.. MilkyWay and Universe give out so much credit for so little work that it is embarassing to even run them. I give them my lowest priorities and allow only one task of each to run at a time. I signed up for them to make up for the lack or work from WCG (now p;ossibly almost fixed) and ClimatePrediction that has an extended period of no new work; and not giving credit for the work that is done. The credit for CPDN work does appear once a week (most of the time), on their web site, but it does not seem to make it to the usual web sites.

I was attempting to do that by adding more crunching power. The stats is the only way I know of here that demonstrates you are doing something. In some projects there are other indicators eg at PrimeGrid where you are notified when you discover a Prime number.

I felt Marcin's reply was rude.

Hi vaugahn,
I'm sorry but no, we cannot ensure a continuous flow of tasks. In the optimization algorithm, one iteration starts when the previous one ended. We usually send around 180.000 task per iteration, and when then end we are able to analyze and to start the next one.

Little by little we are going to add new optimizations of other models, so that while we wait for an iteration of a model to finish, we are sending you others. We are currently with 2, but we need to grow little by little to control that it does not break. Each optimization requires quite a bit of disk space until the results are post-processed.

Indeed, in this project we have no other way of thanking you for your effort than in the statistics, since the final result does not depend on a single simulation (which in my opinion is also nice because no matter how little you do, you also contribute to the final result).

I appreciate the effort you make, however, please, seeing how the current volume of work is and the number of volunteers you are, it is not necessary that you rent machines for it.

This thread has been quite tense, please, let's be understanding of the situations and motivations of others. For my part, I have no objection to explain more and better why we cannot send more, I hope you can understand it.

Best,
Jesús.
