|Description||The Term Date Rape Drugs is Misleading
Although the term Date Rape Drugs has gained lots of media attention for a very long time, it is actually a very misleading term if one were to take a closer look at it. Calling any drug a Date Rape Drug gives the impression that the very purpose of the drug is for use in sexual assault, which of course is not true. People generally take advantage of the properties of any drug and use it for any purpose that suits them. That’s one aspect of drug abuse. For example it’s common to see someone order rohypnol online for use in date rape.
Some of the so-called date rape drugs include Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), ketamine, flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), "ecstasy" (MDMA), 1,4-Butanediol (I,4 BD) and Chloral Hydrate. The above drugs contain incapacitating agents that have the ability to render someone incapable of concerted effort. As a result, if they were targeting by someone and any of these substances secretively administered to them, they could later be sexually abuse and won’t be able to resist. This method has been used by people who were unsure whether or not their date will consent to sex. The only option they saw was to drug and sexually assault or rape them, hence the term “date rape”. Going by the definition of “date rape” one could therefore say alcohol is the oldest and the most widely used date rape drug because it causes drunkenness and most drunk people tend to act without proper reasoning.
