I know people donate CPU time to distributed computing projects for a wide variety of reasons. So I making this thread so that we can all share our reasons for paying electricity bills and hardware purchases just to donate to this project.

Years ago, my mother died of a heart attack and the doctors couldn't tell us what caused it. It was "out of the blue and into the black." I couldn't accept the lack of answers and started digging deeper. I learned that for over 50% of all women their first heart attack is fatal. No one could say why. There are still many ideas but not any proof because very few studies in cartiological science are based on gender. At least not the big ones.

I am donating my money and CPU time to DENIS because it is looking for reasons at cellular level and therefor should save as many women as men.

That's a great reason to crunch. My grandfather had about six heart attacks before he was finally laid to rest.

I hope with more computing power we can answer more questions together whether it's out in space or closer to our hearts

I have computed for several medicine/biology projects along the years on diverse topics, from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases to infections, but never saw a cardiovascular disease project, so being it one of the two top killers (along with cancer) I decided it's time to devote my computer to fighting heart diseases.

My father suffers of atrial fibrillation (treated with Cumadin/Warfarin).
So, i crunched this project.

Being inside an ambulance while paramedics attempt to revive my father was a scary sight. He died the same way as his 2 brothers. heart related. That's why I crunch DENIS.

2 years ago I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance from work on two occasions...... Heart related, of course!!!! Eventually got to see a cardiologist and after asking my family history said I was at high risk of suffering the same fate as my father..... That day I handed my notice in at wok and took early retirement. Best decision I've ever made

I already had a stroke and heart attack. But that is not why I run DENIS, since I doubt any results they get will be soon enough to help me. I do it because it may halp others.
And since my machine is up almost 24/7/365, it is better, IMAO, than running amical numbers, prime number searches, and stuff like that.
I currently run ClimatePrediction, World Community Grid, DENIS, Rosetta, Einstein, and Universe and I let Universe run only if there is nothing else available.

I have a preference for biological projects generally despite me being an engineer and a mathematician. If you haven't got your health you haven't got anything.

Family has a long history of cardiovascular problems and my turn appears to be arriving.

However one of the biggest positives for Denis@Home is Jesús Carro's attitude and communication, something that is sadly lacking in many other projects. I'm not asking for thanks and praise nor daily updates, just simple communication about what the project is doing, what is going right, what is going wrong etc as appropriate.

I run Denis@home now because my 5 machines were running dry and were hungry so I am feeding it Denis.

My main project is World Community Grid but they seem to have problems again. Dead for about 5-6 days now. TN-Grid is on vacation, Rosetta has nothing, and neither does Milkyway and Milkyway is about stuff 100+ light years away. I prefer closer to home. Lastly there is SiDock. Lots of stuff but it is from Russia. Hmmmm! ...and each work unit is about 1 day long. UGH. I am weaning off SiDock now and limiting its share of resources until it runs out.

I'm another World Community Grid volunteer.

I keep this project at 1 priority & the grid at 100.
The outages have been frequent enough to help both projects.

My main project is World Community Grid, but I use this as a backup project. From what I can see this will provide some useful research into various cardiac problems. Too bad this project is not steadier, but they probably have resource restraints like others.
WCG currently having problems again.

I'm admittedly fairly new to BOINC and have been trying out a variety of projects.

After Rosetta@Home went offline, I wasn't receiving much work from World Community Grid (Only Mapping Cancer Markers tasks despite my trying to focus on an Africa Rainfall Forecasting project), and didn't get anything else from LHC@Home or climateprediction.net besides a single task which should be done in 60 days, I decided to set up a poll in an internet friends group where I asked which of the following BOINC projects I should try between Asteroids@Home, DENIS@Home, Einstein@Home, Milkyway@Home, and Ramanujan Machine.

I got a single vote for DENIS@Home from my best friend, and they went on to tell me how they have a family history of heart conditions and even went into cardiac arrest, prompting me to immediately try it.

Unfortunately, DENIS@Home was apparently offline at the moment, but I promised to try it out later.

Now here I am, 30 minutes into my first 17 DENIS@Home tasks. This seems very neat to say the least, but I'll reserve judgement for after those tasks are finished.

I crunch all possible projects until 10k points

then all projects where my team participates in challenges

and then all BOINC projects/subprojects related to medical issues (WCG, Rosetta@Home, DENIS, TN-Grid, SiDock)

and then non-medical GPU projects where my old hardware still gets tasks

and then internet projects where my connection allows (Majestic12)

and then idle projects (WuProp, Gridcoin)

I crunch for Ukraine

Denis for me is a standby project, for when WCG is having issues. Since IBM handed WCG to Krembil there's been lots of issues to say the least.

Back in the late 90s I used to crunch for SETI. My mother died after a very short battle with cancer. I'd lost my dad to a heart attack, mid 90s. My wife is currently fighting her battle with cancer.

So, one evening I was thinking there must be a better use of my PC than SETI. A bit of googling and I discovered United Devices, real research into human illnesses & diseases. I signed up. UD became WCG around 2005 and I've been there ever since.

I tend to prefer projects close to heart, so thats mainly cancer. When Covid hit the world I focussed on that for a year, and back to cancer projects.

On various projects, I've got 92 years runtime, completing >472,000 work units. I'm pleased with that and hope that some of the vast amounts of data WCG processes will lead to a breakthrough.

Unfortunately tasks with WCG have been few and far between, many people have been disappointed regarding the migration and keep hoping for a better more consistant platform. You are in luck with BOINC as there are many projects that look at medical research, these include the following:

Found Denis after WCG went on a hiatus. I was in the 230s. Denis is now my prime project. When no W/U I switch back to WCG.. Seems to be a good fit for me here. Had a heart attack in the early 2000s,. Since than AFIB, Heart ablation, half dozen stents, heart Maze and double valve repair.

Now that my heart is going good, my lungs are now saying hold on there!
