21) Message boards : Number crunching : "DENIS needs 953.7 MB disc space free" (Message 474)

I wonder... maybe free space is causing my task issue (http://denis.usj.es/denisathome/forum_thread.php?id=66) but maybe not.

There should be a notice in the BOINC event log if it hits the limit, and then it won't download any more. However, the DENIS files themselves are quite small, so you would have to be right on the edge of exceeding the limit before you would be limited to a single download. I suppose it is possible, but your 1 task limit is probably due to something else.

Do you have BOINCTasks? It is a lot easier to read the log if you do (as shown in the "Messages" tab). I think there is a version for Linux.

I think they are saying that they need to come out with versions for Linux, etc. and can't do that with just the optimized app itself.

I used to run Climate Prediction Net with World Community Grid/CEP2, and they did not get along very well. I can remember times when there was no CPDN work available, but still the CEP2 would not download and at least one core was idle. Maybe that is fixed with later BOINC versions, but now I just avoid that combination. It might be something similar with DENIS. You could try removing DENIS from the BOINC manager (and CPDN if it is still attached) and then adding the DENIS project back again.

Are you running other BOINC projects on the second machine? If you have done a lot of DENIS tasks recently, then the BOINC scheduler may decide it is time to run the other ones. That is especially so if you have added a new project to the second machine; BOINC will prefer it for awhile (about a week on my machines) before returning to the first project.

Thanks. I don't want to impact future projects that might have larger files of course, but maybe it is possible.

I sometimes get the above error message in the BOINC log when running DENIS, since I place the BOINC Data folder on a ramdisk that is only 1023 MB in size (the maximum of the DATARam free edition). However, DENIS itself uses very little disk space - less than 10 MB even with all cores running and several jobs in the buffer. So there is no problem if I run only DENIS, but when I try to run other projects (e.g., WCG, Rosetta, etc.) then I quickly run out of space.

So I am wondering whether it would be possible for DENIS to reduce its required minimum disk space to something smaller, maybe 500 MB, which is what World Community Grid MCM and UGM require?

PPS: I would encourage all who can to donate a little something to Sesef for this great effort as well!

If he will set up a PayPal account, I will do my part.

I think this could be a boost to a lot of the BOINC projects, who may have good scientists but they may not be so familiar with programming. They need some expert help.

I am all for faster apps, but the reason that thousands of babies in the U.S. were not deformed by thalidomide is because some FDA official refused to approve it without proper testing.
29) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit New ? (Message 163)

From what little I know about Credit New, it looks like a good idea. I couldn't care less what the absolute numerical value is, as long as it proportional to the actual work done and more or less comparable across projects. Actually, I prefer the smaller numbers that Credit New will give. The increase in numbers due to hardware improvements over the years makes the current system silly and a bit cumbersome.

I will gravitate to projects that use the new system.
