CES 2019: the laptops that caught our attention

CES 2019 has been rich in ads. From the autonomous car to synthetic steak, to 8K televisions and gadgets of all kinds, this 52nd edition is without a shadow of a doubt an excellent vintage. In a more conventional field, personal computers (after all, this is the consumer electronics show), the ads were also numerous. No upheaval, or technological leap, but a real maturity in design and design.

We have selected for you the machines that have distinguished themselves...see this here

Asus Zenbook S13

Let's start with the new ZenBook S13 and its remarkable design. The most crucial element is its 13.9-inch screen that incorporates edges of only 2.5 mm thick for a ratio-screen / frame of 97%. The upper corner is so thin that a cut has been added to integrate the front camera. The Zenbook S13 is only 12.9mm thick but can benefit from an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor, up to 1 TB of PCIe SSD storage, 16 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia MX150 graphics card.

Dell Alienware Aera 51M

In a completely different register, how not to evoke the new Alienware Aera 51M. A PC (trans) portable gamer thought to be scalable. The technical features are impressive; it can accommodate in its ultimate version an Intel Core i9-9900K CPU, an Nvidia RTX 2080 (6GB DDR6), a 2.5-inch hard drive, two PCIe SSD, a full HD 1080p screen with a refreshing rate of 144 Hz. But the most intriguing feature is its design. The chassis can be completely disassembled to replace the storage, RAM, CPU and even the graphics card. On the other hand, the port of the GPU is proprietary; it will be necessary to trust Dell to see the arrival of new graphics cards in the long term.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro

Samsung has completely revised its copy with its Notebook 9 Pro. The design is more modern; the lines are clean and straightforward. A new philosophy comes at the right time. It incorporates a unibody chassis 13.97mm close and rotating hinges that allow using the computer in tablet mode. One regret is the lower border of the screen, which is imposing. Connectivity is complete, with USB-C Thunderbolt, a micro-sd port, and a Windows Hello compatible fingerprint reader. He will be entitled to an Intel Core i7 processor, along with 8GB RAM and 256 SSD storage.

Dell XPS 13 (2019)

It is a little instigator, the one who paved the way for ultrabooks with skinny borders. The Dell XPS 13 arrives in a new version. The most notable change is the presence of the webcam above the screen. On the other hand, the Windows Hello system, which allows connecting to Windows via iris recognition is not available. Dell offers a counterpart fingerprint reader (optional). On the technical side, it will be entitled to Core i3, i5, and i7, up to 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of SSD. Choose from a full HD 1080p or 2160p (Dolby Vision) display. Dell finally says it has reworked the internal cooling system to avoid performance losses.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th gen

Lenovo took advantage of CES to present a new version of its must-have Thinkpad X1 Carbon. The finish leaps forward with a carbon frame - and it shows. It is also thinner (14.95mm) and lighter (1.12kg) than previous generations - the battery goes from 57 to 51 Wh, but the battery life is the same.

Lenovo offers many options for choosing the screen:
Full HD IPS (400 nits)
Full HD IPS Touch (300 nits)
WQHD IPS (400 nits)
UHD HDR IPS (500 nits)

There is also a better sound system with four speakers - Dolby Atmos compatible. The perfect keyboard does not change, as is the TrackPoint. On the side of the configuration, Lenovo integrates Intel Core Whiskey Lake chips, up to 16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of PCIe storage. We finally find two USB-A 3.1 ports, two USB-C Thunderbolt, an HDMI output, a jack and a fingerprint reader (in addition to the Windows Hello infrared sensor).

Acer Swift 7

The Acer Swift 7 (2019) made a strong impression with only 990 grams on the scale and a thickness of 9.95 mm. Not bad for a machine that can integrate an Intel Core i7 processor with a boost mode up to 4.2 GHz, but also 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage. A Corning Gorilla 6 lens protects the 14-inch IPS display (Full HD). The edges are less than 3mm thick, which makes it possible to occupy 92% of the chassis surface.

The version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will be available in April from 1799 €.

Lenovo Yoga S940

The Yoga range of the Chinese manufacturer has become a must. The new S940 refines its look and heals display quality. It can have a 4K UHD display (3840 x 2160 pixels) compatible with Dolby Vision. A Full HD version (500 nits) is HDR400 compatible. Under the hood, you'll find up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and a Core i7. More interestingly, it incorporates artificial intelligence with eye-tracking technology to check when you're away from your computer. It can then lock automatically and even warn you if someone is watching the screen.

HP Specter x360

This new version of the Specter x360 is equipped with a Samsung AMOLED panel. This display technology offers an excellent contrast ratio (100,000: 1) as well as intense colors. It supports 100% of the DCI-P3 space. The main disadvantage is the risk of "burn" or "burn-in" that affects OLED displays. Image retention specific to this techno which hope has been corrected. Regarding interior features, this version is equipped with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor coupled with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage (PCIe). On the design side, it can rotate 360 degrees for use in tablet mode.
