But a project with a month of no work, people may leave and may never come back.

People will come back fast enough if they know about it.

Be sure to post a notice on the BOINC forum.

The "Projects" section should do it.

They are running OK for me under Ubuntu 20.04.4.
They complete in the usual 51 minutes.

I now have 2 inconclusive of the Beta 0.13 out of 483 valid.
They have largely solved it on Linux I think.

I have 130 valid of the 0.13 and no inconclusive yet.
That is better, though a bit early to say very much.

On, of course. These WU's are no different than any other in that regard.

Sometimes I limit the number of work units running at a time for some projects (not DENIS).
But that is because of cache requirements. If they take a lot of cache, you are sometimes better off by running fewer of them.
Even then however, I leave HT on, and simply reduce the % of CPU cores in use in BOINC.

About 10% of mine are inconclusive. They need to look into it.

Since your computers are hidden, we can not say much more.

DENIS will now send me work, but only one or two work units at a time, even if I suspend any other BOINC project.

0.53% were tasks that were executed satisfactorily but whose results were not validated when comparing whit the results of the other volunteers. We are studying what could have happened in these tasks so that the result did not coincide with those of the other. As soon as everything is checked, we will repeat the test and if everything goes well, we will move on to a larger test.

It is probably due to overclocking. A lot of users think that because they can run a CPU without crashing, that it is working OK for scientific purposes.

This is one of the few projects where Windows is faster than Linux. Running on a real core of an i5-3550 under Ubuntu 16.04, a 1.05 Beta takes 30 1/2 hours. Running on a virtual core of an i7-4771 (though with only four cores active, so that it is effectively a full core) under Windows 7 64-bit takes 19 hours. A small part of this (maybe 15% or so) can be attributed to Haswell being faster than Ivy Bridge, but most of it has to be because DENIS 1.05 Beta just runs faster under Windows.

That is fine with me; I have both types of machines available, it is just a question of how to allocate the work.

Gibson,

Those are all good points and quite valid. But it is a small project. Something like World Community Grid for example, or Folding (they have CPU work in addition to GPU work) have much larger teams and there is always someone around for a reply or status update of some sort. You are of course aware of these yourself; you can always check back here once in a while.

There is usually no way to delete your account on any BOINC project, but if you just want to detach BOINC from a project, you just use the "Remove" button in the "Projects" tab of BOINC Manager.

However, there is no need to even do that. Just add whatever project you want, and leave DENIS attached. You will get new work when it arrives.

I assume you don't know about Crunch3r's SSE4.1 app version. This is the one I'm referring to (not sesef's SSE3 one): it's two times faster than AVX2 on my CPU when running one WU at a time without any other application (distributed computing nor not-DC) so no throttling at all. I know it's a really simple scenario but it allows you to understand things easily.
Sure enough on other CPUs it will perform differently than my Haswll CPU with Hyper Threading and factory power limitation (which I removed through Intel extreme tuning utility though), but I wrote it clearly that I was referring to my particular case.

EDIT
Corrected typos

I tried Cruncher's app when it first came out; it was slightly faster than Sesef, but I don't think better than the AVX2 that I recall. I hope that is simple enough.

My tests show the following on an i7-4771 CPU, Win7 64-bit:
Comparison of Sesef's DENIS optimizations on the "3XP 1800" series work units:

With Sesef 1.6.1 AVX2 optimization:
DENIS running on 8 virtual cores - 9 minutes 42 seconds (CPU temp - 63 C average)
DENIS running on 4 virtual cores (other 4 cores free) - 7 minutes 7 seconds (CPU temp - 55 C average)

With Sesef 1.5.5 SSE3 optimization:
DENIS running on 8 virtual cores - 10 minutes 43 seconds (CPU temp - 60 C average)
DENIS running on 4 virtual cores (other 4 cores free) - 8 minutes 9 seconds (CPU temp - 54 C average)

So in each case, the AVX2 optimization is faster than the SSE3 optimization. I doubt that Sesef would have released it otherwise.
However, the temps can build up, especially if you have a GPU card. That could cause throttling of the CPU in some cases, thus lowering its speed.

The AVX2 version looks very good to me. For the 600 series, I am getting about 2 minutes 32 seconds running on four cores of an i7-4771 (another core supports a GPU on Folding, and the other three cores are largely free). This is on Win7 64-bit. The core temps are a little higher, which is usual for AVX2 work, averaging about 70 C now.

All this gives about 30% speed improvement over 1.4.1

It is now over 10x as compared to the official DENIS version (Win7 64-bit, i7-4771).

Thanks a lot.

On some sites, there are DNS problems. A few months ago, I could not get to some distributed computing site (I think it was Folding). It turned out that the DNS server supplied by my ISP couldn't reach it, and I switched over to Google. That is 8.8.8.8 (Primary) and 8.8.4.4 (Secondary), though I don't know if it works outside the U.S. (I set it up in my router Network WAN settings.)

Not a problem that I can see here in the U.S. My logs show that I have been uploading and downloading regularly (Win7 64-bit, BOINC 7.6.9, running four cores on an i7-4771). The DENIS homepage and forum seem to be OK also.
