1) Message boards : Number crunching : Canceled Work Units by Server (Message 2194)

Here's another task, it has yet to run and I will manually cancel it.
Currently it's _4, after two invalid and two valid results. Yet it was sent to my queue and never retracted.

Thank you, but unfortunately whatever happened may be more endemic.

My computer regularly connects to the server, and, just in case, I forced an update before making my post.

I'm getting work that's been validated for days, but it's NOT getting cancelled by the server.

I'm another World Community Grid volunteer.

I keep this project at 1 priority & the grid at 100.
The outages have been frequent enough to help both projects.

I ran two Windows Updates recently, so my computer restarted twice.
I'm looking at over 50 Validation Inconclusives, with 4 tasks already marked as Invalid.

Otherwise my computer is reliable.

So something is still wrong with checkpointing. The task resumes, but the answer is wrong.

I'm getting storage server errors, maybe it's related.

And my tasks were on BOTH Windows 10 and Windows Vista (don't ask ><).

I went ahead and let a lot of them just run to their natural completion.

Got home, and the ones that finished just restarted from the beginning.

They are checkpointing, they now have a much longer ETA. The longest is 628 days.

I'm going to have to cancel a LOT of work before it gets back to the server. Between the ones that just finished and rolled over and the ones I'm canceling because they're in the same batch and probably about to roll over, I've wasted 12 days, 16 hours and 14 minutes of CPU time.

Admins - if you are going to release long unstable work units, the very least you can do is communicate with your volunteers. This is insulting.

Okay, mine are averaging 16 hours each at this point and haven't finished. There's another thread showing somebody getting 'CPU time exceeded' with 24 hours of work.

Admins, do I cancel or what?

At this point, 183 CPU hours of work are up for grabs.

On my 4930k, I've got a bunch of WU's, with some on their 10th hour, and only a third completed. Steady state 8000.

Updating to the new version of BOINC did nothing.

Several hours of crunching a day are being tossed out the window. It's 90 degrees where I live. So DENIS is going to 0 priority until version 1.06 or whenever this is solved.

It was released as the recommended version...today. What a scold! When I posted that, it hadn't been released.

7.4.42 must be such an old version.

Moreover, where in the release notes does it say anything about slot directory bugs getting fixed?

Thanks for your feedback.

Can you please recommend a set of parameters that you think will work?

Currently I'm switching between applications every 70 minutes.

Minimum work buffer is .1 days, maximum additional buffer is another .1 days.

There is no CPU time restriction.

As for the newest BOINC Beta, I would not feel comfortable switching to that if it might disrupt my other tasks.

Still getting them. A lot of these happen when I'm nowhere near the computer to close or open the application.

I've never seen this project lack for work units, the server is constantly creating more tasks from the previous results.

I expect this would be a fine candidate to be listed on your website.

Once in a blue moon, I'll get a task that errors in "finish file present too long". If I recall correctly, I've had this happen on another BOINC project, where the calculation became larger than the maximum upload size.

However, this task completed on other computers, so possibly my computer was in error.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your quick response.

I hope that this stress test is giving you an excellent preview.

As a laymen, I'm a little nervous about your answer.

Aleatory simulations rely on random number generators to make the work units, right? So the work could go on indefinitely? You seem to be proposing unlimited work for a project, but you're not sure about your goals or methodology?

We seem to be churning through every task in the queue within a day.

I would love to get the big picture of how much work this project needs.
